Garmin uses blog for new customer service

Corporate Social Media Case Study: Garmin
With the end of year holidays recently finished, Garmin knew that many customers were going to have questions about their new GPS units. Rather than write a self-congratulatory “We had a great Christmas!” post, the blog was used to welcome new customers and point out the right directions to find answers to common first-time questions. This has a direct ROI benefit as a good portion of customers will now go to the blog for questions instead of calling a tech support call center.

Corporate Social Media Case Study: Best Western
Best Western’s self-described “girl on the go” and travel blogger Amy uses the blog to answer to customer questions about travel and doesn’t always talk about the company when dispensing her advice. In a recent post, for example, Amy posted a Q&A from “Dan, Illinois” asking about advice how to keep a 2-year old happy during a driving trip to Disney World. Written in a folksy and effortlessly charming manner, Amy cheerfully dispensed advice with the experience of being a mother herself to lend credibility: “You can expect to hit some low points along the way but when you’re daughter starts screaming in the backseat just imagine that you’re in a Chevy Chase comedy and try to laugh at the situation.”

“We decided to join because we wanted to connect with companies that have the same kind of concerns, and see how we can share best practices, benchmark against each other, and learn from that.”
- Lee Aase, Mayo Clinic
“I found that being with my peers, the Blog Council has helped validate ideas and generate new ones. The Blog Council is a valuable resource helping people at companies learn to become part of the conversation.”
- Rob DeRobertis, Analog Devices
“Social media is all about conversations, and this group is all about a larger conversation among companies who face similar challenges.”
- Molly Schonthal, Nokia
“The Blog Council provides a valuable forum for innovative companies to validate and intellectually stress-test their social media strategies and tactics. Regardless of industry, the level of member interaction and responsiveness of the Blog Council staff has been a huge asset in successfully navigating the highly dynamic social space.”
- Matt Lehman, Progressive
“The Blog Council is above all a unique opportunity to meet with our peers from other large companies who have embarked on social media projects. We all have - more or less - the same questions and we are also trying to solve the same issues. The council is the right place for us to pick each other’s brains and hear the answers to our questions straight from the horse’s mouth. The issues that large companies are facing are umpteen times more complex and deserve a special forum. This forum in my eyes is what the Blog Council is all about.”
- Yann Gourvennec, Orange Business Services
“As a member of Blog Council, you’re able to share, connect, and learn best practices with the top people in the industry. As leaders in the social landscape, we are frequently siloed in our own corporations, and don’t take the time to learn from others. With the Blog Council, I have the ability to build relationships with my peers who face the same opportunities and challenges I’m presented with on a daily basis.”
- Ali McCourt, Intuit

Corporate Social Media Case Study: the Red Cross
The American Red Cross is a huge brand in its own right, so it makes sense that the organization would fully embrace social media. In a recent post, Claire Sale (the Red Cross “social media guru”) shared some of the different ways that individuals can interact with the brand:
- American Red Cross iGoogle theme (The theme rotates disaster relief photos throughout the day)
- A custom Red Cross avatar for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
- A Red Cross Banner
- An embeddable Red Cross PSA for Facebook, your web site, etc.
- An invite to become a supporter on Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Twitter, Ammado, SocialVibe, or LinkedIn.

Use a blog to respond to news in real-time
Posted by Blog Council Staff on December 29, 2008
Corporate Social Media Case Study: Nortel
One reason it’s important to have a blog is to respond to breaking news as it happens. When the Wall Street Journal recently published a story saying that the company was seeking legal advice on a potential bankruptcy filing, Nortel’s New Media Manager Bo Gowan immediately responded and posted a story on the company’s Buzzword blog to clarify the news as it was happening. “To be clear,” Gowan wrote, “Nortel’s Ronald Alepian expressed to the WSJ that no bankruptcy filing is imminent.”

Blogging to show some holiday spirit
Posted by Blog Council Staff on December 24, 2008
With the Christmas holiday a day away, sometimes it’s great to blog for fun and to show off a little. GE’s Global Research team recently did with pictures and video showing how the team built a working 6×15 OLED (organic light-emitting diode) Christmas tree. They’re geeks, they’re having fun, and there may not be too much ROI you can derive from it except the joy and satisfaction of showing your team’s pride and joy off for the world to see.
