Air Force Blog AssessmentOver on Web Ink Now, David Meerman Scott recently shared some details about how the US Air Force participates in social media.  In addition to highlighting the organization’s blog and YouTube channel, David posted a chart that details how the Air Force responds to blog posts.  The chart offers a fascinating behind the scenes look at how one particular large organization decides how to respond to online conversation, and yet remains clearly adaptable for use by any company that is developing its own engagement strategy.

Garmin uses blog for new customer service

Corporate Social Media Case Study: Garmin

With the end of year holidays recently finished, Garmin knew that many customers were going to have questions about their new GPS units.  Rather than write a self-congratulatory “We had a great Christmas!” post, the blog was used to welcome new customers and point out the right directions to find answers to common first-time questions.  This has a direct ROI benefit as a good portion of customers will now go to the blog for questions instead of calling a tech support call center.

Corporate Social Media Case Study: Best Western

Best Western’s self-described “girl on the go” and travel blogger Amy uses the blog to answer to customer questions about travel and doesn’t always talk about the company when dispensing her advice.  In a recent post, for example, Amy posted a Q&A from “Dan, Illinois” asking about advice how to keep a 2-year old happy during a driving trip to Disney World.  Written in a folksy and effortlessly charming manner, Amy cheerfully dispensed advice with the experience of being a mother herself to lend credibility: “You can expect to hit some low points along the way but when you’re daughter starts screaming in the backseat just imagine that you’re in a Chevy Chase comedy and try to laugh at the situation.”

Lead the Global Adoption of Social Media in Big Companies

We’re looking for a senior executive who will provide day-to-day leadership and management for the Blog Council (http://www.blogcouncil.org).

The Blog Council is an organization for senior executives in charge of social media at the largest corporations in the world. Members include Allstate, Coca-Cola, Dell, General Electric, Home Depot, Intel, Mayo Clinic, Microsoft, Molson, Nestle, Nokia, Procter & Gamble, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, UPS, United States Coast Guard, Walmart, and Wells Fargo.

We support those people who are teaching big companies how to listen and engage with their customers and communities. If you think blogging and social media is important, imagine what you could do with truly committed leaders providing big budgets and lots of people to do it right. Our members are awesome people doing great work, and you’ll really like them.

You will have responsibility for all programs, fundraising, and day-to-day management functions. This is a fast-growing organization looking for a leader to take it to the next level. Our primary goal is increasing the quantity and variety of member benefits, including online and teleconference discussions, webinars, member meetings, collaborative projects, and publications.

You are a proven community leader or association executive with a track record working for corporate-backed organizations. You should have strong knowledge of social media, blogs, and marketing. You should be comfortable and experienced working with the SVP-level contacts at Fortune 500 companies on a daily basis.

We’re looking for solid management experience, preferably in a similar organization or community with budget exceeding $2 million. You should have the skills and experience necessary to be the primary executive responsible for all day-to-day management of the organization. This is not a learn-on-the-job situation.

Use a blog to respond to news in real-time

Corporate Social Media Case Study: Nortel

One reason it’s important to have a blog is to respond to breaking news as it happens.  When the Wall Street Journal recently published a story saying that the company was seeking legal advice on a potential bankruptcy filing, Nortel’s New Media Manager Bo Gowan immediately responded and posted a story on the company’s Buzzword blog to clarify the news as it was happening.  “To be clear,” Gowan wrote, “Nortel’s Ronald Alepian expressed to the WSJ that no bankruptcy filing is imminent.”
